A Better Life for Julia, Revisited

Women are back in the news after Tuesday’s presidential debate between President Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney. Front pages of America’s newspapers today highlight the battle playing out for the support of women.

There are stark differences between liberals and conservatives on a range of public policy issues. And they were best articulated by Obama in “Life of Julia,” which portrayed a liberal vision of life for one woman. We wrote at the time:

In Julia’s story, as depicted in a cartoon slideshow, a faceless young American woman grows from birth to old age with the government at her side every step of the way. In the good times and the bad times, government is there to lift Julia up — and without government, Julia could not succeed in life.

Conservatives have a different vision. Heritage revised Obama’s slideshow to show how conservative policies empower women — and all Americans — without relying on government every step of the way. It’s worth another look in light of the news:

Many conservative policies, which are outlined in Heritage’s Saving the American Dream plan, set individuals on a path to prosperity and solve our country’s greatest problems.
